Save your Child from Tooth Decay

Tooth decay which was previously thought to be a disease of adults is now widespread among children. Studies show that cases of tooth decay is now on the rise among children than asthma and bronchitis. This is attributed to the fact that children are more attracted to sweets than adults and sugar from these foods accumulates in the tooth’s surface. When these food precipitates harden on the tooth’s surface plaque starts to form around the gum line, on the edge of fillings and grooved surfaces of teeth. Plaque is the building block of tartar.

Tartar and plaque have acids in them which eventually dissolve the tooth’s enamel resulting to cavities. When tooth decay penetrates the vessels surrounding the tooth area, severe toothache may be experienced.

Good oral hygiene habits may save your children from dental caries. To promote good oral hygiene, observe the following things in your home.

1) Have a “one-stop-shop” for mouthwashes, medicine, toothbrush, toothpaste and other related products designed to enhance good oral hygiene. Fluoride rich products are known to prevent child tooth decay. Stock on products with fluoride components in its various forms, in paste and/or in tablets.

2) Teach your children the habit of brushing and flossing their teeth. Train them to brush their teeth every after meal and before going to bed. At nighttime, the mouth produces less saliva which promotes bacterial build-up in the mouth. This increases the risk of child tooth decay.

3) Take your children to the dentist regularly. Make every visit to a dental office an experience to look forward for children. Check-up and examination prevents further development of tooth decay.

4) Watch your children’s diet. Keep tab on the frequency your children indulge on sugary or acidic food for this may increase their chances of getting tooth decay. Fruits and vegetables are basically good, however too much of good thing may also result to acidity; serve milk and cheese to neutralize their effect.

Be instrumental in giving your children a brighter future by giving them a happy and confident smile. Stay happy and keep smiling.
